Chapter 3

=Ethan=

Oh. My. God. I don’t know what to say or do. I had not expected that to happen, not at all. For Max to tell me he loves me... Eep. I know he is serious, but in my head there is still the voice that tells me that everyone that tells me they love me want something from me. Though... I’m pregnant, mated and locked up in his castle, I don’t really know what else he can get from me.

I want to be really happy, I want to be able to accept his love as easily as he is giving it to me. But I’ve not been raised like that. Love needed to be deserved, especially after... Yeah. After that love was only deserved, in small amounts, because I’m damaged. Affection and love, two things that I don’t know if I can get, or give.

“Ethan.” Max’s voice is soft, rumbling. “I don’t want to hurt you, but I need to know. Why does your mum scare you?”

Where to start... There are so many reasons so many problems. I try to find a good starting point but there is none, all the things from my life before I left for college are a jumble in my head. I stay where I am, safely against Max, and shrug.

“Let’s try this differently. Where is your father?”

As if that makes anything any easier. “My mum kicked him out of the house. I was maybe six years old.”

“Do you remember much about him?”

I remember his love, his smile. The smile that I sometimes see in the mirror looking back at me. “He was a good man, nice and caring. That is all that I remember.”

“Why did your mum kick him out?”

Mum’s words come up in my head: evil, bad, broken, damaged. “I don’t-” I don’t know. All I remember is pain, tears and darkness. And after that it was all different.

“You said something about an aunt, auntie?”

Auntie Evie, such a sweet loving woman. I remember that it all started with her. She said something, she looked so happy, but after that everyone started yelling. “She was there when it happened.”

“What happened?”

“She came to the house, she was really happy. Dad was happy too. But after that it’s all darkness. They all yelled and Evie and dad were kicked out of the house. We left that same evening.” It was scary, I never knew what was going to happen and mum was so angry.

Max stills. “Who did you get your last name from, your mum or your dad?”

“Dad.” I answer before I realise the significance of the question. Of course... “Damnit.”

“Yeah.” Max rubs my back, soothing motions that don’t work now that my brain is going at full speed.

Evil, bad, damaged. Going to a school that was filled only with humans, staying out of areas where werewolves might show up. “I thought that they had done something bad. At one time I thought that maybe they... you know... together. That is how much mum hated them.
